Building Technology - energy-efficiency
[Motor Summit 2008]

S.A.F.E. has hosted in collaboration with SwissEnergy and SEEEM the first Motor Summit from 10 to 11 April 2007 in Zurich Switzerland.
The 2-day event has brought together both international and national motor experts, representatives from government and energy efficiency agencies with industrial motor users to discuss technical developments and lowering of market barriers for high efficient motor systems. The presentations you can find in the News column.

The second Motor Summit will be in Zurich Switzerland from 24 to 26 November 2008. See www.seeem.org for program and registration.

[Motor Systems]

Electric motor systems in buildings, industry and transport consume some 40% of total electricity demand. They drive pumps, fans, compressors and various traction elements. Efficiency can be improved with proper sizing, using adjustable speed drives and high efficiency Premium motors. Many times the major improvments are in the motor application system: leaks, unnecessary resistance, etc.
S.A.F.E. is working on a number of motor system projects:

Motor Summit 2008: Conrad U. Brunner
MotorChallenge Switzerland: Jürg Nipkow
Energy-using Products Lot 11: Conrad U. Brunner
Energy+Pumps (European project): Jürg Nipkow
SEEEM (harmonization of motor standards): Conrad U. Brunner
Topmotors Switzerland: Conrad U. Brunner, Jürg Nipkow, Thomas Heldstab

[Energy efficient lifts]
Lifts can account for a significant proportion of the consumption of electricity by building systems. A S.A.F.E. research project (final report 11/2005) found out that stand-by mode can amount to more than 75% of total energy consumption. But layout and planning (size, speed etc.) are also important for efficient solutions.
